App: Grandma's Kitchen

Grandma's Kitchen app

Description: Grandma's cooking up a storm in this fresh-baked app that stirs kindergarten and first grade skills into the batter. Kids can "bake" compound words, make and decorate a cake, tell time to see when the cake will be ready, and even help Grandma wash the dishes.

Reading, math, and pattern-recognition are seamlessly integrated into eight fun mini-games, and live-action instructive cooking tips add to the deliciousness. Customize the games to choose which skills to activate. So hide the knives and step aside – your eensie-weensie Emeril or junior Julia Child will be whipping up dinner – with a side of reading and math!

Description: Sometimes simple is best. No matter how many fancy toys your kid has, they always end up on your lap saying, "Mama, tell me a story." iStoryTime is like a central library for kids' books, and they wisely left off extraneous features, letting the stories shine.

It includes four free books (The Giant Smurf, Madagascar, Ice Age and Robin Hood) and then you can buy more à la carte, or pay a monthly or annual fee, Netflix-style, for unlimited books. With new books released in the app every week, there is always fresh content to enjoy. Stories can be narrated or silent, allowing your child to read independently when they’re ready.

Apparoo App of the Week: Tic Toc Time

After two weeks of great app introductions, it's time to see what Apparoo, the app discovery service for busy moms, has found for this week!

Apparoo logo

This week Apparoo has found a great deal on an award-winning app that teaches kids to tell time!

App: Tic Toc Time

Tic Toc Time app

Description: From a kid's perspective, time is a bizarre concept: there are 60 seconds and 60 minutes, but 12 hours... unless there are 24! And phrases like 'a quarter til' and 'half past' that we take for granted just seem to make their brains melt.

Tic Toc Time takes a holistic approach to teaching time; a family of beavers leads a progression of fun games that first explain using a compass and the movement of the sun and shadows before logically arriving at both digital and analog time-telling. A good time is guaranteed for all!

Blinkbuggy is an online baby book that puts all your photos, milestones and funny stories in one place – and it's as easy as a status update.

Apparoo App of the Week: Rio Read and Play App

When it comes to finding great apps for kids, the process can feel akin to the classic "needle in a haystack" search. There are so many available, that how is a mom to know which ones will be entertaining, educational and worth the price (or, better yet, a great deal)?

Considering how much my own children get excited when they discover a new app waiting for them, I've partnered with Apparoo, the app discovery service for busy moms, to share a weekly 'Apparoo App of the Week.' Each week they have negotiated to find great paid apps at heavily discounted rates (sometimes even free!) so get ready to download some fun!
