Laugh (and Learn) with Carolina Improv Company in Myrtle Beach!

As this past summer was coming to an end, my family went on one final vacation, opting to visit the one and only Myrtle Beach, South Carolina. We hadn't been there before, but there were plenty of sights, attractions, restaurants and, of course, beaches that we were excited to see and try. After all, this is one vacation destination that has something for everyone, right?

However, along with the typical tourist areas that we had planned on visiting, my husband and I were also excited to have the chance to check out an aspect that is unique to Myrtle Beach. Because when it comes to entertainment, visitors as well as locals are raving about the one-of-a-kind hilarious time that they had with Carolina Improv Company!

Uptown Theater

Dedicated to improvisation, Carolina Improv Company is one part education and one part entertainment conveniently located in the Uptown Theater in Myrtle Beach Mall. Whether you visit to take one of their many classes or workshops or arrive for an evening filled with laughter, CIC is unique, family-friendly, and all-around fun.

Excited for our night out and big fans of the television show Whose Line Is It Anyway? (which CIC compares itself to), my husband and I arrived ready to see what the evening might entail.

After being greeted and shown to our seats (and checking out the beverage options for sale — beer, wine and soda), we immediately commented on how close the seats are to the small, triangular stage. The front row could, quite literally, reach out and touch the players during the show!

However, I later realized that once the audience-interactive improv show began, I didn't notice the size of the theater or stage at all. It was time to laugh instead!

Throughout the next ~90 minutes (including one 10-minute intermission), the players performed a multitude of games using suggestions from the audience to create instant comedy right before our eyes. Whether we were calling out ideas or being singled out to answer a question or two...

...the audience was definitely a part of the decision-making process for each act.

As for the games themselves, there is just no way to predict what might come next. From being able to only use one particular word or phrase to trying to get one player to figure out why she was late to work (she had had gum on her mailbox and ended up having to take a UFO, of course), the entire show was endearing and engaging!

Carolina Improv comedy

While I consider myself fairly quick-witted (usually), the idea of getting up in front of a crowd and being able to not only think on my feet but be funny at the same time made me more and more impressed with the CIC players!

Carolina Improv comedy review

By the time the show came to an end, it was clear that fans could return night after night to Carolina Improv Comedy and would see an entirely different performance each time.

Not only are the games different, but the players themselves rotate through. Add to that the impact made by the suggestions given, the composition of the audience themselves, and each individual's personal tastes and sense of humor, and you just never know what you're going to get!

And remember, if you're in the area and would prefer to have your own improv training, CIC is the place to go for that as well!

Other than the complimentary tickets I was provided to attend a show by Carolina Improv Company, I was not compensated or enticed to do this post in any way. This review is solely my honest opinion about this company and show.

I would love to see a live improv show such as this. I never thought about using improv skills in my own life, this would be a great workshop to attend.

That sounds like a fun way to spend an evening. I have a friend who does improve and she loves doing it.
