Laundry Room Tips for a #BrilliantHEClean with Tide, Maytag and The Home Depot {$50 The Home Depot Gift Card Giveaway}

Did you know that the average family does around 400 loads of laundry each year?

While part of me wants to keep a tally next year to see how my own family compares (an item for my 2014 to-do list!), I really have no doubt that that number is pretty accurate. It's like the flow of dirty clothes just never stops!

So considering the amount of time that is spent on this particular household chore, doesn't it make sense that you do it in a space that is functional? After all, with products like Tide and Maytag, and a practical, well-designed space, you can get clothes clean in one wash and have more time to spend with your family and friends.

Not sure where to start in sprucing up your laundry room? P&G has partnered with Jenny Komenda, decorator and blogger at The Little Green Notebook to help share tips on how to create a more efficient space in your laundry room.

Little Green Notebook blog

I have to admit that I wasn't familiar with Jenny's blog before, but was instantly addicted from my very first visit! I am always in awe of crafty, DIY people that can turn a creative idea and something old into something modern, stylish and new with their bare hands... and each of Jenny's posts are so inspiring that I can't wait to see what she does next!

When it comes to redesigning and organizing your laundry room, Jenny has some great tips:
  • Dealing with a dark, cave-like laundry room is a chore in and of itself! By taking off the doors on a few of your upper cabinets, you'll open up the space and create a place to store baskets. In this laundry room, we assigned baskets for every member of the house, which makes sorting a breeze!
  • Why not decoupage or paint insides of cabinets for a fun pop of color? It's a guaranteed smile each and every time you reach for your detergent.
  • Don't like the cabinets, floors and countertops in your laundry room? Every surface can be painted or resurfaced! For less than $30 in materials, the outdated linoleum, brick pavers and old, dark cabinets were updated in this laundry room with paint and with a concrete overlay product.
  • A rolling laundry butler can be your best friend, doing triple duty with a hanging bar, a rolling basket and a drying rack. It's the perfect choice for a laundry room with limited space that hasn't been updated in a few decades.
  • Don't neglect your laundry room walls! Hanging interesting art and mirrors will elevate your room and make it feel less utilitarian and more “homey”. Suddenly those 400 loads of laundry most of us will do this year might actually be enjoyable!
  • Use a slab of stone or a simple piece of painted MDF on top of the washer/dryer units to create a folding station and to prevent socks from slipping in between the appliances.
I absolutely love Jenny's redesign of her own laundry room and can't wait to put some of her tips to work in my own... as well as the rest of the house!
