The Importance of Coin Lithium Battery Safety with Energizer {Prize Pack Giveaway}

Energizer logo
Ask any parent about the items that are necessary to have in mass around their home and you'll most likely receive similar answers, things such as clean socks, toilet paper, Band-Aids, crayons, batteries, etc.

As for the latter, along with a well-stocked supply of AA and AAA batteries to power children's toys large and small, coin lithium batteries are also found around most homes. These coin-sized lithium batteries are in everyday items like remote controls, keyless entry devices for cars, flameless candles and children's books with sound.

Great product, right?

Coin Lithium Batteries

But as well as powering our devices and gadgets, coin lithium batteries can also cause serious chemical burns in as little as two hours if ingested. Their small size makes them even easier for a child to swallow than traditional batteries, yet in a survey conducted by Energizer, 62% of parents reported being unaware of the risk associated with coin lithium batteries.

In support of National Childhood Injury Prevention Week (September 1-7, 2013), the National Safety Council and Energizer have teamed up to share the 4 S's of Coin Lithium Battery Safety and some important tips every parent should know to help prevent injuries from the ingestion of coin lithium batteries.

coin battery infographic

Energizer has developed a national awareness campaign in partnership with Safe Kids Worldwide called The Battery Controlled, which works to alert parents and caregivers to the dangers of swallowing coin lithium batteries.

Identifying ways its products can help keep families safe is just one part of the Energizer commitment to designing its products with people in mind and investing in programs that have a positive impact on the world!

Child resistant imageAlso, Energizer has led the industry by being the first to voluntarily develop packaging for its 20 millimeter coin lithium batteries that meets the Consumer Product Safety Commission's (CPSC) strict guidelines for child-resistant packaging.

For packaging to qualify as effectively child-resistant, it is tested with groups of children ages 42-51 months who are given 10 minutes to attempt to open it — a total of 80% of the children tested must not succeed in opening the package.

While I took on the job of testing the packaging from Energizer and one of their competitors, I am quite certain that my results would be the same if my children had been the testers instead.

The result of the Energizer package? A little bent and creased, but I couldn't find a single way to get in to where the batteries were stored without having scissors or a knife.

As for the competitor, it took me less than a minute to pick at the cardboard packaging and break through the lining to where I had a coin lithium battery in my hand. Definitely not child-resistant!

When it comes to safety in your home, every step counts. I appreciate that Energizer has taken measures to ensure that their coin lithium batteries cannot be removed from their packaging if a child accidentally gets hold of one.

However, if it is suspected that a child has swallowed a coin lithium battery, it is important to go to the emergency department immediately. For more information on child safety and coin lithium battery safety, please visit nsc.org, Energizer.com, TheBatteryControlled.com and Poison.org/battery.

You can also find out more about all of Energizer's great products, impressive mission, and sustainability measures, and more by visiting their website and connecting with them on Facebook and Twitter.

And, thanks to their generosity, one person will be even more prepared to stay safe in their home as well, because...

One lucky person will win an Energizer Injury Prevention Prize Pack*!

Energizer giveaway
*Prize Pack includes (2) packages of Energizer Coin Lithium batteries, (1) Energizer Weatheready 2-in-1 LED Light and (1) Energizer LED Nightlight in winner's choice of Sleeping Beauty or Cars design
