Much to my husband's chagrin, I avoid shaving my legs in the winter as much as possible. It's just a lot of work for... them to be covered up in pants? What's the point?
I do have to admit that I like the feeling of having clean shaven legs, though. But... no, I'm sticking with the opinion that it's just too much work for pretty much no reason at all. Now, if you can give me a quick, easy, painless and non-expensive way to take the hair off... well, sure. I'd try that.
Combine those factors with my love of infomercials and products that are As Seen On TV and that can only mean this: the Smooth Away Vibe.
Claiming it can smooth away unwanted hair in moments while exfoliating at the same time, the Smooth Away Vibe is the new and improved version of the pre-existing Smooth Away. The main difference is that the Vibe includes a smoothing vibration pod that not only buffs away the hair but also stimulates the follicles at the same time.
With a pronouncement that all that's needed is to rub circles in one direction and then rub circles in the other direction and the hair will be gone from your legs, upper lip, underarms and even sensitive areas like cheeks, chin and bikini area, I put my skepticism aside and was ready to give the Smooth Away Vibe a chance.
Pulling this kit out of the box, I found one large applicator with smoothing vibration pad, one small applicator, two large replacement pads, five small flex-crystal replacement pads and a plastic carrying case to store it all in.
I appreciated the simple directions, as there really isn't all that much to know or do in order to use the Smooth Away Vibe. My skin was already clean and dry, so all that was needed was to peel off the backing to the pad and stick it directly onto the corresponding applicator.
Running my hand along the super fine crystals ("delicate enough to not damage your skin but strong enough to remove even the toughest hair"), I thought that they felt similar to dull, smooth sandpaper.
Continuing to follow the instruction booklet, I slipped my fingers into the applicator, pressed on the vibrating pad to turn it on (it gives a slight vibration) and applied it to my leg in a small, circular motion. First one way, then the other. The directions said to not apply too much pressure, so I rubbed.
I went ahead and applied harder pressure, just to see, and found the same results: not much. Granted, I'm an impatient person, but even after trying the large applicator multiple times on different areas at slower and faster speeds, I still couldn't see any difference... except possibly a little exfoliation, which wasn't bad.
Trying the small applicator next (designed for areas like your face, ankles, etc), I did manage to see a small amount of hair disappear. Whether that was because the hair was more delicate or because I had managed to find the right amount of pressure, I'm not sure, but it was nice to see some positive results. So much that I looked like the happy people in the infomercial who barely buffed and were thrilled to never have to shave again? No.
I did appreciate that the Smooth Away Vibe did meet some of the statements that were made, mainly that it is 100% pain free, doesn't involve any chemicals and doesn't result in any razor burn. If I could have gotten it to work better, I would find it much more portable and convenient for travel rather than having to pack a razor and shaving cream.
I also found that it did do a decent job of exfoliating my skin, which was nice, but I would also wonder if it is even possible to purchase refills of the pads, let alone where you would have to go to get them. As the Smooth Away Vibe does only retail for $9.95, it isn't a huge a investment in the first place, but if there aren't refills... then after a few months you wouldn't be left with much.
